Suggestions for conducting your own safety sign audit.
The most important facet of surveying premises is to be aware that whilst you are fully conversant with the necessary precautions to be followed, your staff, especially new arrivals may not be. Therefore, view the situation through “their eyes”.

The most important - How can you safely exit from the building?    
Are the exists clearly marked and free from obstruction?    
If no exist is in the immediate vicinity, are there signs and arrows indicating in which direction the exists lay?    
Where is emergency equipment stored?    
Is the first-aid box clearly identified?    
Is the emergency shower and eye-wash properly sign-posted?    
Fire fighting equipment needs to be correctly identified.    
Does each fire extinguisher have a location triangle (with correct colour “dot”) mounted high above it?    
Is there a disc immediately above each extinguisher denoting type of fires extinguisher can safely be used on?    
What hazardous situations exist that require the wearing of protective equipment?    
As an example, do all bench grinders carry correct mandatory eye protection sign?    
Which areas are restricted either to certain personnel or specific actions?    
Is smoking prohibited in any areas especially around fuel, gas or solvents?    
Are there any potentially hazardous areas that warnings are appropriate?    
As an example, is there an overhead crane or corrosive chemicals in the area?
